AUDITIONS
1st-Time Auditioner
We have a qualifying process for the PATA auditions. You will need to attend and successfully pass a qualifying audition in order to register for the 2012 general auditions. Those audition dates are now active.
Out-of-Town Auditioner
If you live more than 100 miles from Portland, you may send in your headshot and resume and ask for a one-time exemption from the qualifying auditions. These requests must be made during a specific time frame. Feb. 20-March 12th, 2012. No early submissions will be held. Send only during those dates.
Current Members
If you have auditioned for PATA in the past and are current on membership dues, you may register when the website registration begins on March 20th.
Members who have not auditioned in the past two years will need to attend and pass a qualifying audition prior to registration for the PATA General Auditions.
If you auditioned in 2011 and had "time" called on your audition: YOU MUST ATTEND AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE A QUALIFYING AUDITION in order to register for your next PATA audition. No exceptions!
HEADSHOT AND RESUME REQUIREMENTS
Headshots:
The Maximum File Size for a Headshot is 1 mb. Valid file types are: *.jpg, *.gif. The system will auto-size your headshot. PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD THUMBNAIL PHOTOS AS THEY WILL BE DISTORTED.
Resumes: NEW FOR 2012
Resumes need to be created in your profile using the online resume builder. Please note the following:
Q. I see that my city name posts to the online/printable resume. Is our city a requirement for the online resume? That is fine if it is necessary, but perhaps it is just a glitch that it populated into the resume? If it is a glitch, how do I remove it? (I did indicate via checkbox on my profile page not to display address.)
A. Your address is not required. Only the city and state are printed on the resume. If you do not enter it on your profile, it will not appear on the resume.
Q. Do we have the ability to have our credits displayed in the order we desire, so that the resume will print as we would wish?
A. Credits on the resume are arranged in order of year then the order in which they were entered. Note: We will be adding functionality so that you can determine the order these items appear. For now, these appear in date order, newest on top.
Q. I would like to take an acting class or private study again in the future. Can I include in the online resume education section?
A. Regarding the training classes, please use "TRNG-COMPLETED" to add miscellaneous items such as workshops, ongoing classes, private study, etc. and list the instructor.
PATA compiles and prints headshots and resumes for each auditor. Each applicant will submit only one copy of each document, and will be required to pay a $12 materials fee for each audition scheduled to cover the cost of the printing.
Failure to present materials in this form will result in the loss of your audition time.
If "time" is called during your audition, you will be required to complete a qualifying audition before you can register for the next PATA audition cycle (scheduled for March/April 2012).
ABOUT MONOLOGUE AUDITIONS
Non-Equity actors have a total of two (2) minutes for their audition. AEA Members have a total of three (3) minutes for their audition. These times do not include your introductions. We strongly recommend presenting two contrasting monologues. A chair will be provided.
ABOUT MUSICAL AUDITIONS
Singers have a total of two (2) minutes for their audition, not including an introduction. We strongly recommend presenting two contrasting songs, approximately 16-32 bars each. A monologue is optional if attending only the musical auditions. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring sheet music in the appropriate key, with your start and stop points clearly marked. We suggest that you set your music in a three ring binder for the accompanist. If you prefer to bring your own accompanist, you may. You may not sing acappella. You may not accompany yourself. No recorded music will be allowed. We do not have opera companies attending, we suggest you stick to a musical theatre library.
If you have not sung at the PATA auditions in the past, or you are a new member you need to attend the Audition Workshop in spring 2012 to get the 411 on what we expect in terms of preparation for the singing auditions.
Some hints from one of our accompanists.
- If the notes are too tiny for you to read, they'll be too tiny for me to read.
- If the staff lines are missing in the copy, it's really hard to read. The copy should be made darker if the notes and/or lines aren't really clear.
- "I read whatever is there, chords or notes, and do the best I can. I love it when markings are written in red or using a Sharpie or something. Sight reading is kind of a split second thing, so if I have to squint to read markings, or remember to ignore some of the notes and pay attention to others, forget it."
- Avoid cutting off notes at the bottom of the page if possible. The accompanist can compensate and figure out what the bass should be, but it's another mental manipulation that has to happen in time. Reducing to 95% when copying usually fits everything on the page.
- When asked for the tempo, don't give a metronome setting. Instead, demonstrate the tempo you want.
ABOUT DANCE AUDITIONS
Dance auditions are geared toward advanced dancers. All auditioners must attend the pre-audition session during which the combinations will be taught. At the audition time, auditioners will be seen in small groups to perform these combinations. Please be warmed up and ready to learn a combination. Please wear clothing that shows the line of your body. Women: character heels preferred, jazz shoes acceptable. Men: jazz or character shoes. Auditioners who are not adequately prepared may be asked not to audition at the discretion of the dance captain. This is a true dance call.
Actors Who Move Audition for actors and singers who MOVE, but don't feel they are dancers. Suggested for those interested in musical theatre and experimental theatre. Come dressed to move. Ladies bring rehearsal skirt, gentlemen brink hard soled dress shoes.
TIME LIMITS
The time limit is STRICTLY ENFORCED. The timekeeper will call "Time" at the mark. If that happens, DO NOT CONTINUE. Instead, simply stop where you are, say "Thank you," and exit. (FYI-how you handle this situation says a lot about you to the adjudicators) PATA considers having time called as going over the time limit.
MEMORIZATION
Your audition must be memorized. Scripts or "cheat sheets" will not be allowed. If your audition is not memorized, the timer will ask you to stop. If that happens, DO NOT CONTINUE. Instead, simply stop where you are, say "Thank you," and exit.
CALLBACKS
Callbacks are at the discretion of each attending producing organization. PATA is not a producing organization, and will not hold any callback auditions.
Membership, Application Fees and Materials
- Non-Equity actors must be a current PATA or TPS member to audition. PATA membership may be purchased or renewed online at the end of the application process. (Be sure that your membership is current through April 9th or the system will cancel your audition on the day your membership expires.)
- Equity actors are not required to be PATA members to audition. Equity actors are required to have a current Equity card in hand, and be in good standing. Failure to present your card at the audition will result in the loss of your audition slot. The PATA City-Wide Auditions are not official AEA auditions. However, local AEA theatres do attend, and many smaller theatres use AEA agreements, codes and contracts to hire union actors. Follow the same procedure as non-AEA actors, and be sure to have your card with you on the day of your audition. You will need a code to register as a non-member equity auditioner. Please email sam@portlandtheatre.com for that information. NOTE: membership is encouraged to receive the full benefits of PATA.
- Out-of-town auditioners should contact Sam Hull (sam@portlandtheatre.com) by email if not able to attend a qualifying date (see below).
- All auditioners are required to register themselves online and provide PATA with the following electronically:
• Completed profile and online resume, including a successful headshot upload in correct format,
• $12 materials fee PER audition (to cover the cost of printing the auditor packets)
All audition materials and fees must be received by the deadline.
If your application or materials fee is received after the deadline, your audition slot will be forfeited and a $25.00 late fee will be charged if you wish to apply for another audition time.
SCHEDULING
Applicants may choose a half-hour timeslot during the online application process. You should plan on arriving at least 30 min. before your scheduled audition. We tend to run 5 min, ahead of schedule.
STANDBY SLOTS
We do not use standby slots.
NOTIFICATION
You will receive an instant email confirmation of your reservation when you select your time through the online application process. Please be sure to check your junk mail box if you do not see this confirmation within a minute or two. Please note that although your timeslot is reserved, you will forfeit that reservation if all materials and fees are not submitted by the deadline.
Please note that we will include an announcement in our "In the Wings" e-newsletter (so please sign up if you have not), on our Facebook Page, on our LinkedIn Group Page as soon as we have dates double-confirmed and ready to announce. We are currently in the process of doing that now.

INFORMATION FOR AUDITORS
ABOUT THE AUDITIONS
PATA organizes city-wide auditions annually, which are hosted at theatres throughout the Portland area. These auditions are open to all PATA members, allowing around 300 actors, singers, and dancers to be seen by more than 50 auditors over the course of four days.
Auditioners have two minutes for each audition; Equity members receive three minutes. Auditors will receive a ten minute break every hour, and a longer break for lunch or dinner. PATA will provide coffee and light snacks throughout the auditions.
Due to your past requests, we have a full Dance Audition for legit dancers and our Actors/Singers who Move Audition. Please plan to attend these. We are recommending that actors interested in experimental theatre attend the the latter.
Actors who Move auditions.
Individuals who are not casting for a company or independent production are discouraged from auditing.
Auditors will NOT be allowed to audition in a time block in which they are auditing.
AUDITION TIMES
You may sign up to audit any or all of the audition blocks.
ABOUT HEADSHOTS AND RESUMES
PATA will collect all of the headshots and resumes as PDFs and compile them into paper and CD packets for each auditing company.
Please indicate how many paper packets or CDs you'd like when you RSVP so that we can have them ready for you at the auditions.
AUDITOR FEES
These auditions are free for all PATA member companies and independent directors and producers who are current individual members. Auditors who do not wish to become PATA members may pay a $75 fee to audit these auditions. This fee, like our membership dues, covers the costs associated with this audition including space rental, piano rental, and providing food and beverages throughout the auditions. The auditor fee can be applied to purchase of a company, business or individual membership within one month of the auditions. You may purchase or renew your membership at this time by visiting our membership page.
