The Valentine Fund

The Valentine Fund was initiated in 1987 to provide financial assistance to members of the Portland-area theatre community in times of medical or personal emergency.

PATA is proud to have supported our artists in times of need for more than 30 years. The Valentine Fund is made possible by donations from the community, businesses, and PATA members.  We hold an annual fundraising drive and accept donations throughout the year.

Valentine Fund FAQs

How long does the application process take?
Once your application is complete, the Valentine Fund panel, made up of theatre professionals and community members, will aim to have a decision made within 30-45 days.

Is my information confidential?
The only individuals privy to your identifying confidential information are the PATA Office Manager, the Valentine Fund panel, and the President and the Treasurer of the PATA Board of Directors.

Can I find out the names of the people on the Valentine Fund panel?
No. Everyone who serves is an anonymous member.

What kind of documentation should I provide?
Please, provide any information that you believe will help us make a decision.  Anything you think is important to your situation.  Examples include but are not limited to the following:

      • letters from a physician
      • invoices paid
      • medical records
      • proof of losses
      • etc.

What kind of situations qualify?
First, you must be a student performer, individual performer, or theatre technician member of the Portland Area Theatre Alliance. The Valentine Fund can help you through strenuous times and a variety of needs apply. We focus on dispersing funds to active members of the theatre community who have encountered unforeseen hardships.

If my application is denied, can I apply at a later date?
Yes!  However, you must wait 2 weeks before you may submit a followup application with answers to additional questions and more supporting documents. You can request up to $1,500 per application. The PATA Board maintains ultimate decision-making authority. All decisions made by the PATA Board are final and binding.

What is the process for applying?

Please, fill out your online application here. Attach any information to support your application. Once your application is received, your application will be reviewed by the anonymous Valentine Fund panel, and the Board will make the final decision. You will be contacted about the Board's decision.

How often can I apply for funds?

After the Valentine Fund panel makes a decision in response to your application, if they grant you funds, you must wait 6 months before you may submit another application. If they do not grant you funds, you must wait 2 weeks before you may submit a followup application with answers to additional questions and more supporting documents.
